DIY Fixes for a Slow-Draining Bathtub
DIY Fixes for a Slow-Draining Bathtub
A slow-draining bathtub can be more than an annoyance—it’s a sign that your plumbing needs attention. Whether you’re dealing with standing water or sluggish drainage, there are safe, effective ways to handle the issue before calling in a pro. At Charlotte Plumbing, we’ve seen it all, and we’re sharing the best DIY methods homeowners can try first.
What to Do When Your Bathtub Starts Draining Slowly
When water starts pooling around your feet every time you shower, it usually means a clog is forming in the drain. Hair, soap scum, and mineral buildup are the most common culprits. But with a little patience and the right tools, you can often fix the problem yourself—and restore your tub’s normal flow.
Method 1: Remove Hair and Debris by Hand
Start with the basics:
- Remove the drain stopper or screen.
- Use a flashlight to check for visible hair or gunk near the surface.
- Use a gloved hand, tweezers, or a drain claw to pull out any buildup.
Sometimes this alone can restore full flow, especially if the clog is near the surface.
Method 2: Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain
A safe and simple first step:
- Bring a pot of water to a boil.
- Carefully pour it directly into the drain in two to three stages.
- Let it sit for a few minutes between pours.
This works best for soap or conditioner buildup, but won’t break down hair.
Method 3: Use Baking Soda and Vinegar
An effective and eco-friendly chemical reaction:
- Pour ½ cup of baking soda into the drain.
- Follow with 1 cup of white vinegar.
- Cover the drain and wait 15–30 minutes.
- Flush with a kettle of hot water.
Repeat once if needed, but avoid mixing this method with store-bought drain cleaners.
